Maximum Protection

Tough Coat is an incredibly strong, water-based sealant. This is a very popular choice for people that want to seal kitchen cabinets, outdoor furniture, and table tops to make them water-resistant, scratch-resistant, and better able to stand up to heavy wear and tear! As our strongest sealant, it offers maximum protection that will preserve your furniture’s surfaces for years to come.

How does Tough Coat differ from Clear Coat?

Tough Coat offers the highest durability and requires only two coats for maximum protection, whereas Clear Coat will require up to four coats. Tough Coat is VOC-compliant and best suited for kitchen table tops, kitchen cabinets and outdoor furniture. Clear Coat, on the other hand is 100% VOC-free and requires less of a learning curve to use. If you are not experienced with applying clear finishes, we suggest Clear Coat because it is more user-friendly than Tough Coat.

If you’d like to use a 100% natural product with light protection, try using Wax or Hemp Oil.

Tough Coat Product Features:

  • Adds extremely durable protection for high-traffic projects such as kitchen cabinets
  • Adds a beautiful satin sheen
  • Water-based and non-yellowing
  • Suitable for exterior projects
  • Eco-friendly and VOC-compliant

IMPORTANT NOTE: It is very important to make sure that you let your last coat of paint dry for at least 24 hours before proceeding with Tough Coat, otherwise you may end up with a streaky finish. If your work space is cold or humid, you’ll want to wait at least 72 hours so your paint coats have plenty of time to dry all the way through.

PLEASE NOTE: Do NOT apply Wax, Hemp Oil, or other oil-based products before applying Tough Coat.

Great purchase

Easy to apply with sponge brush. Dried clear and even. I used it on a painted pallet outside. Only a thin coat was needed. It poured out 4 days after the application and the paint was not damaged at all. Highly recommend this product.

A bit disappointed

I used the Tough Coat as directed when doing the top coat for a cabinet door that I painted with the Country Chic paint. I was disappointed with the appearance after applying the 2 coats. It didn't cover well and the sponge brush marks were visible. It wasn't too warm or too cool in the room and I was careful not to apply it too thick. Not sure what might have gone wrong. Happy to receive helpful feedback please.

Country Chic Paint

Hi Leanne,

I'm sorry to hear you weren't happy with the finish that Tough Coat created! If you were seeing white streaks as the Tough Coat dried, it may be an issue of dry time. The paint may not have had enough time to fully dry before the Tough Coat was applied.

From my own experience, I find where I'm most likely to run into issues is not going over the same area twice. Tough Coat will start to dry very quickly, so you have to be careful to apply it and leave it. If you go over areas that have already started to tack up, it will create texture in the finish.

If you'd like to send photos of what happened, you're welcome to send them to me at hello@countrychicpaint.com. I'd be happy to take a closer look!

Difficult to use but want a good top coat

The top coat was hard to use as part of my tables were black and it left "milky" looking spots on some of the black. I repainted the black and coated again however still a few "milky" spots. I gave a 4 star as the top coat seems very durable.

Country Chic Paint

Hi Susan, I'm sorry to hear that the Tough Coat changed the color like that. We refer to that as "blushing". It usually happens when either the paint hasn't had quite enough time to dry before the Tough Coat was applied, or it was overworked a bit as you were applying it. Regardless, your tables turned out amazing! Thank you for taking the time to write a review for us.
