Krista from The Happy Housie gave these Walmart crates a dry brushed, rustic look with Devotion, Midnight Sky, and Simplicity!
Hello everyone! It is Krista from The Happy Housie back again today to share another fun project for my sons' shared bedroom: easy Rustic Country Chic Painted Crates with Dark Wax. I was so excited to finally try a project using the dark, or antiquing wax. It added such amazing character to my finished piece, and now this crate feels years old rather then brand new!
I started out with these plain new crates that I picked up at my local Walmart for under $9.
I started out by painting them all over with the beautiful Country Chic red called Devotion.
Once dry, I 'dry brushed' on some Midnight Sky. By dry brushing, I mean that I wiped most of the paint off my brush and went over the crate sparingly, leaving spots where the Devotion showed through as the primary colour.
Once the Midnight Sky was dry, I used the same technique to add my white layer: Simplicity. I wiped the excess paint off my brush onto some scrap brown paper.
I love how using a dry brushed technique uses so little paint, and the best part about doing this technique with Country Chic paint is that if you go to heavy you can very easily wet distress and remove some paint by using a damp cloth to remove some within the first hour of painting it.
I let my last layer of Simplicity dry thoroughly and then decided to use dark, or antiquing wax, to add some character and age.
They are the perfect addition to our boys' shared bedroom - I have repeatedly used the colors Midnight Sky, Simplicity, and Devotion in their room and I just love them. Red, white, and blue are such a classic combination and they suit the nautical feel of my sons' room perfectly.
I just love the antiquing wax on these and am in awe of how it added so much age and character to the crate. It truly looks as though I found a vintage crate to store my boys' books in rather then painted a new crate from Walmart. Which is perfect, because beautiful vintage pieces are difficult to find where I live.
Thanks for reading. And remember, my housie friends, HOME isn't built in a day. Enjoy the journey.
