Painted Mason Jar Tutorial {guest post}

Rachel from Maison de Pax is sharing her first guest post on our blog today and you'll love the project she has for you: painted mason jars. So easy, but such a great result! It's the perfect project for some of our sample jars!

Hello Country Chic Paint lovers (and, for those of you who have yet to try it, soon-to-be-lovers)! I'm Rachel from Maison de Pax, and I am so honored to be a part of the Country Chic Paint blogger squad. At Maison de Pax, we are working to renovate, redecorate, and rejuvenate our 1940 colonial to be a place where peace can be found; feel free to tour our home if you'd like. Our most recent focus has been our attic renovation, but for years I have loved to make over old file cabinets, paint mason jars, and create my own decor on a budget. With Country Chic Paint, I've already created a chippy side table, painted a "sunbleached" look, and gilded a frame... I love the endless possibilities! Today, I'm excited to share a simple but stunning project: painted mason jars.

You may have seen similar projects before; it's not rocket science. I've used acrylic craft paints and spray paint in the past, but this was my first time to try a chalk-based paint on mason jars.

I find two major benefits to the chalk-based paint. First, it seems to stick to the glass much better than other paints (since chalk-based paint is made especially for adherence). And second, Country Chic Paint distresses easily and smoothly, giving a natural, worn look to the jars.

So, without further ado, here's the simple step-by-step process:

1. Paint the outside of clean, empty mason jars with your choice of color (I used Vintage Cupcake, Vanilla Frosting, and Pebble Beach).

Hint: put your hand in the jar and paint the rim first, then set the jar upside down to paint the rest.

2. Allow time to dry (I waited ~30 minutes) and paint a second coat.

3. Distress lightly with sandpaper (note: I did NOT use a circular sander; I just had some leftover paper... distress by hand using 220 grit or higher).

4. Spray all jars with clear acrylic sealer to protect your work. I'm sure you could wax them, too, but as I plan to put flowers in mine and wax is not recommended for surfaces that will get wet often, I chose to use an acrylic sealer.

That's it! So simple. I'm saving the pink jars for something special, but I'm enjoying the gray and white in the meantime. I hope you enjoy them, too!
