Embossing Plaster Dresser {guest post}

Another stunning piece on the blog today by Mary from Orphans With MakeUp. She used Icicle, Vanilla Frosting, and Roasted Chestnut embossing plaster to create the beautiful, raised detailing effect on this dresser!

Hello friends,

I love dressers with carved or raised details. I am always looking for ways to personalize my furniture and I am just super excited with the final results on this dresser using the Embossing Plaster.

Here is a close-up of the finished drawer fronts.

Below is a picture of the dresser before. A solid antique dresser, but lacking any details.

I did not like the fake tiger oak stripes so I first stripped the top and stained it a lighter stain. The top was then sealed with the Tough Coat.

I then prepped the bottom of the dresser and the mirror by lightly sanding it.

Because I wanted clean edges with no rough plaster hanging on the edges, I taped the edges of each drawer and also taped out a circle where the hardware holes went.

I chose to paint the dresser in Icicle, to which I added a bit of Vanilla Frosting to lighten it a bit. I also watered the paint down. I was going more for a wash effect.

Just a tiny shade lighter.

So now on to stencilling with the plaster.

I measured and marked the centre of the stencil on all 4 sides, and also measured the centre of the drawer fronts. It is important to tape down your stencil. I started by centring the stencil in the middle of the drawer. I then applied the plaster with a scraper to even it out. Remove the stencil right after the plaster is applied and wash it.

I am using the Roasted Chestnut Embossing Plaster. After the plaster was applied, I let it dry a bit. When it was firm (about 20-30 minutes), I then moved the stencil to the left and right side and repeated applying the plaster.

Don’t worry too much if it bleeds through a bit since it will be painted over and distressed so you won’t notice it. The plaster did have some tiny crack lines, but it is firmly in place and the cracking just adds to the character.

Since it was my first time using the plaster, I decided to wait overnight and paint the second and third watered-down coat of paint then.

When the final coat of paint dried, I distressed the drawer fronts using a fair amount of pressure to reveal the flourishes in the stencil. I then sealed with the Natural Wax.
Clean up of the plaster is very easy with just warm water and soap.

Here are a few more pictures of the final results.

I also painted the drawer bottoms in Vanilla Frosting for a cleaner look.

So I am in love with the Embossing Plaster. There is just no limit to the possibilities of what can be done with it.

Absolutely stunning Mary! I have embossing plaster on my Country Chic Shopping List and after seeing this, I can’t wait to try it. Now I thought I knew all the CCP colors but Icicle is new to me. Adding it to my list as well.

I have recently seen furniture with this Stenciled Plaster treatment but did not know how it was done-thanks for showing us how! This piece went from Plain Jane to Spectacular and has me looking with new eyes at some of the drab pieces of furniture I have. Where did you get the large stencil from and what is the pattern name? I love that you are Cdn too and these products are available in my Province – thanks!
