Reading Nook Makeover {guest post}

Today, Randa from The Everyday Domestic is sharing with us the simple steps she took to create her very own relaxation space.

Something that bothers my about my home is my living room. It’s long and narrow and it’s hard to make use of the whole space. I recently decided to divide the space and create a little reading nook; a place for me to read, relax and blog.

I had a vision of the space I wanted to create, but my supplies (and budget) were limited. I picked up a beautiful french script accent chair at a great price, but I was missing a table. I wanted something that I could set a cup of coffee on, but something that wouldn’t tempt me to store clutter. The space was empty for months, and I wasn’t sure what to do. I picked up a mini table from my Grandpa’s house, brought it back and realized that it was perfect.

I’m usually not one that can see past colours and see the potential in items but from the moment I saw this table, I knew I had to have it. All it needed was a mini makeover from Country Chic Paint.

Country Chic Paint and their chalk-based paint, has made my DIY life a whole lot easier. There is no sanding needed (perfect for those always in a rush - like me). Just apply a few coats, wax and you’re done. The finish is incredible. I chose to use the colour Simplicity (just like I did with the DIY Framed Chalkboard).

The application was really easy, and it only took two coats to cover up the previous colours (which was surprising to me since the dark wood did show through after the first coat). The paint smoothed out on it’s own and after waiting (an agonizing) twenty four hours, I applied the wax.

I used Country Chic Paint’s wax brush for the hard to reach areas, and a lint free cloth for the larger parts. Waxing furniture is my favorite thing to do (well, when it comes to a DIY project). The piece really transforms with this finishing touch and I love watching my furniture come alive with character.

It’s amazing what a little paint can do.

Country Chic Paint’s “Simplicity” not only transformed my piece of furniture (with very little effort), but it completely reinvented my space. My boring and empty corner is now a welcoming spot where I can take a moment and take time for myself.

Love what you did with your little nook, Randa :) Long rooms can be so hard to furnish/decorate. Breaking them up a little like you did is a great idea. Love that chair!

I am a newbie at the DIY stuff…. and I had no idea about this wax stuff…. I guess this is why my daughter’s furniture has gotten all scratched and the paint chips??

Your reading nook looks great Randa, I love it! The Country Chic Paint is my kind of paint! I hate the thought of sanding and all the other prep so this would be perfect :-)
